What is molecular diagnostic testing?

Molecular diagnostics examines DNA, RNA and other molecular targets to help detect infectious agents, identify genetic variants, characterize cancers and support treatment decisions. Depending on the clinical question, investigations may use PCR, real-time PCR, RT-PCR, digital PCR, sequencing, MLPA or other validated methods.
