What is the Mentzer Index?

What Should Be Considered After a Low Mentzer Index?
A Mentzer Index below 13 may suggest a thalassemia trait pattern, but it does not establish the diagnosis.
Depending on the clinical situation, further evaluation may include ferritin, serum iron, transferrin saturation, CRP or other inflammatory markers, peripheral blood smear and hemoglobin analysis.
If thalassemia is suspected despite a normal hemoglobin electrophoresis, molecular testing may be required in selected cases, particularly for alpha-thalassemia.
