Clinical Interpretation

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a screening index calculated from body weight and height. It does not directly measure body fat and should not be considered a standalone diagnostic parameter.

BMI may be less representative in individuals with high muscle mass, oedema, pregnancy, or substantially different body composition.

In Asian populations, including Indians, metabolic risk may occur at lower BMI values. Waist circumference, blood pressure, glucose status and lipid profile can therefore provide additional information when assessing cardiometabolic risk.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I enter height in inches?
Yes. Select "inch" from the height-unit selector. The calculator automatically converts inches to centimetres before calculating BMI.
Can I enter height in centimetres?
Yes. Centimetres are the default height unit.
Can I enter weight in pounds?
Yes. Select lb from the weight-unit selector. The calculator automatically converts pounds to kilograms.
What is the normal BMI range?
For standard adult BMI classification, 18.5-24.9 kg/m2 is classified as normal weight.
Does BMI diagnose obesity?
No. BMI is a screening measure. Clinical assessment should consider body composition, waist circumference and other relevant clinical and metabolic parameters.
Disclaimer: This calculator is intended for educational and screening purposes. BMI should not be used as a standalone diagnostic measure. Clinical interpretation should consider age, sex, ethnicity, body composition, waist circumference and other relevant laboratory or clinical findings.
